However, this picturesque town located in the northern part of the island may be a bit disappointing after an earlier visit to Hvar. Stari Grad is in place, where the ancient lighthouse once stood. The name Hvar comes from the Greek word phaios – Lighthouse. Stari Grad was the capital of the island to 1331 r., in which year the Venetians moved the administrative center to Hvar. A lot comes from these times, medieval district, which can still be admired in the city center today. The palace of the Croatian poet Petar Hektorovic is also worth visiting (1487-1572), with a pond with fish and a garden.

Accommodation

Camp Jurjevac (VI-beginning IX) it is located near the marina, right in the city center. It is poorly marked, so be sure to ask for it.

Private room owners are less likely to hang around incoming buses and ferries than in Hvar. If the room rental agencies are closed, you have to look for accommodation on your own.

Journey

Local ferries from Split arrive in Stari Grad three times a day (7 $). Once a week, on Sunday evening, ferries from Vela Luka to Anlcona in Italy also call here (44 $). The ferry port is located approx. 2 km from the city in a bay surrounded by pine trees, to which a nice path leads. You can reach the marina by bus. 3 daily buses run from the city to Hvar (2 $ plus 1 $ for one piece of baggage).
