VELA LUKA

Vela Luka lies on the western tip of Korcula and is the main fishing center of the island, for which the position above the great favors, sheltered bay. On a small one, the forested island of Ośjak in the bay right next to the town, a national park was created. There are not many monuments or beaches in Vela Luka, so if you come here by ferry from Split or Hvar, you can immediately take the bus and go to the town of Korcula and look for accommodation there. The advantage of Vela Luka is this, that there are fewer tourists here than in Korcula.

Health baths

Kalos Medical Center (tel.812422) at Vela Luka he uses mud with health properties (mud therapy) for the treatment of rheumatic diseases. The center has a heated swimming pool, salt water, where water massages are performed (underwater massage). You can also undergo therapeutic massages or electrotherapy here, but treatments must be prescribed in advance by a doctor. However, this is not a problem, because the Kalos hotel reception staff help arrange a doctor's appointment. From mud baths (5 $) can be used only on weekdays until. 10.00.

Accommodation

Tourist information office (tel.82042), only open in summer, helps to find private accommodation. The office is located behind the Hotel Jadran, by the sea, ok. 100 m from the ferry.

If the office is closed, you can go to Pansion u Domaćinstva Barćot (tel.812014), exactly in front of the hotel fadran. This nice guesthouse with 24 rooms is open all year round, and the prices are only slightly higher than for private accommodation. Some rooms on 3 1st floor have balconies.

Camping Mindel (tel.812494) lies 6 km northwest of Velej Luki (no bus goes there).

Journey

Ferries from Split land at the western end of the bay, buses to Korcula are waiting for them. At least one ferry per day goes from Vela Luka to Split (8 $) and it stops on the way in Hvar 5 times a week all year round. It leaves Vela Luka very early in the morning, so you can spend the night here, if you are planning a trip on this ferry, although the bus from Korcula provides a convenient connection. From June to September, the Jadrolinija ferry runs from Vela Luka to Ancona once a week (44 $), stopping on the way in the ports of Stari Grad and Vis.
