Split

Museums and galleries – The least known, but a very interesting museum in Split is the Maritime Museum (closed. pn., 9.00-12.00, Free entrance), which is housed in the fortress of Oppression (z 1657 r.) at the top of the hill, east of the old town. It consists of collections of war maps, photos, works of art and miniature models; the descriptions of the exhibits are only in Croatian. .

It is worth visiting the Archaeological Museum (Zrinjsko-Frankopanska 25) north of the city (Ott. only morning, closed. pn.). The best of the collection, coming from 1820 r., located in the outside garden. Items placed in showcases would be even more interesting, if the subtitles were not only in Croatian.

The City Museum at ul. Papalićeva east of the Narodni Trg square (wt.-pt. 10.00-17.00, sb.-nd. 10.00-12.00) has an interestingly arranged collection of works of art, painting, furniture and clothes from Split. The subtitles are in Croatian.

Other museums in Split are located west of the old town.

Museum of Archaeological Monuments of Croatia (Ivan Mestrovicia Promenade, closed. pn.) looks impressive from the outside, but the lack of descriptions in western languages makes it, that it may be of interest mainly to Croats. Some of the exhibits are probably replicas, but it doesn't matter, if you don't know, what are you looking at.

A stay at the Meśtrovic Gallery brings a refreshing contrast (Ivan Mestrovicia Promenade 46). You can watch a fascinating one here, a well-arranged collection of works by this outstanding sculptor, who erected the gallery building as a personal residence in the years 1931-1939. Initially, he intended to spend the last years of his life here, however, right after World War II, he decided to emigrate to the USA. Bus #12 passes the gallery gate. Behind the building, there are beaches on the south side of the peninsula.

Directly from Galeria Meśtrović you can head to the Marjan hill. Go up Tonća Petrasova Marovicia Street on the west side of the gallery and follow the stairs straight to Put Meja Street. Then turn left and walk west, to the building at Putu Meja 76 -the path begins on its west side. On the Marjan hill you can walk through the forest, there is an old chapel here, the city's zoo and some excellent viewpoints.

The best seats cost approx. 10 $ and there is generally no problem getting tickets on the same day. The theater building was erected in 1891 r. and completely restored in 1979 r., keeping the original style. It is worth coming here for the performance, if only because of the architecture. During the break, it is worth climbing the stairs and seeing the foyer.
